The English language has gained an official status in Ghana and has become its national language. In media, English is used nationally via radio and television broadcast. For instance, the famous Ghana Broadcast Corporation runs programs in English. Newspapers, textbooks, and other learning materials are also written and published in English rather than the indigenous languages, because there is a higher economic motivation for publishers behind that. Further, most advertisements are written and made in English. More recently in social media and specifically on Facebook, there are almost a million and a half Facebook users in Ghana and the predominant language of interaction among them is English. According to Adika (2012), "Many radio TV stations as well as presenters are on Facebook and frequently post information on their walls and invite the public to comment, and all this is done in English" (p. 162).
